Job Purpose

 

This role is based within the Research team of Business Information Services (BIS) and is responsible for conducting general research for bankers and other staff within the EBRD.

 

The BIS Research team undertakes unsupervised, in-depth and often complex research into various sectors, entities and markets relating to the bank’s countries and areas of operation. Researchers use a wide range of online business information and market data sources to identify, verify and filter relevant information and data.

 

Background

 

The BIS Research team is part of Business Information Services, which also conduct checks on the identity, reputation, and commercial and political interests of all parties with whom the bank intends to conduct business, and monitor parties in connection with banking projects, as part of the Bank’s integrity and risk management process.

 

BIS is also responsible for purchasing and managing a wide range of data & information sources for the Bank, representing a substantial portion of the Bank’s overall spend on this expense category.

 

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research into sectors, entities and markets to identify major players, products, market share, potential investment opportunities and trends, etc.
  • Conduct M&A, Equity and Fixed Income research. Identify and collate data providing an overview of how certain markets are developing in our countries of operation, and source macro-economic, country, statistical and demographic data for use by economists and others in the Bank.
  • Liaise with colleagues about work allocation to help ensure that research request volumes are shared equally and efficiently (mostly daily turnaround of requests).
  • Advise and guide bank staff undertaking their own research to ensure they make effective and efficient use of the data sources available. Deliver induction sessions to Bank staff, contribute content to BIS intranet pages, and otherwise support users in accessing data and information.
  • Evaluate and assess existing and potential information sources to ensure that they meet business needs. Provide feedback to data providers to help ensure their services continue to develop in line with the bank’s requirements.
  • Maintain an accurate and comprehensive audit trail of all research requests so that any related or similar queries are answered in the most efficient way.
  • Develop client relations with bank staff using BIS research services and ensure that services continue to meet business needs. Constantly review the opportunities to streamline and improve research processes and investigate potential improvements.
  • Promote BIS across the bank to encourage all Bank staff to take advantage of the support available.

 

Other responsibilities may be assigned from time to time. These may include one or more of the following:

  • Conduct research in other languages where skills permit.
  • Responsibility for liaising with specific user groups (e.g. sector groups) and developing sector knowledge.
  • Responsibility for defining, managing and completing agreed projects in order to ensure that BIS services continue to be developed efficiently to meet changing business needs.

 

Academic Qualification

  • Relevant Bachelor degree, ideally combined with a postgraduate or other professional qualification in Information Management.

 

Experience

  • Extensive experience (probably gained in an investment bank, major corporate, multinational or international organization) of conducting in-depth business information and financial markets related research using a wide variety of business information and market data sources.

 

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of and interest in emerging market economies and related data sources.
  • Knowledge of EBRD’s regions and sectors highly desirable.
  • Good awareness of financial markets and how they work.
  • Knowledge of corporate structures, corporate finance and M&A.
  • In-depth knowledge of market data and other information sources, such as Eikon, Bloomberg, Factiva, BvD, EMIS, rating agencies.
  • Ability to maximize use and benefit of multiple platforms / media / data sources.  
  • Highly developed information mining and retrieval skills.
  • Enquiring and analytical mind with ability to assimilate facts quickly and effectively.  Ability to exercise judgment and analytical skills gained through experience and based on knowledge of information sources.
  • Excellent time management and ability to multi-task under pressure. Ability to operate in an environment with continuously changing priorities, and finalise work quickly and accurately.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. Highly literate with excellent writing skills.
  • Fluency in other languages desirable, particularly central and eastern European, or French and Arabic.
