Purpose of Job

 

The Internship that will consist of two c. 6-month rotations with two teams in Risk Management Department: Operational Risk Management and Equity Risk Management (Equity Funds/Financial Institutions sub-team) and will:

 

  • Support the work of the respective team.
  • The Intern will assist with a wide range of activities including some administrative tasks.
  • The Intern will assist with the tasks assigned by the respective coverage area leads

 

Risk Management is the Bank’s second line of defence, which is responsible for the independent verification, challenge, reporting and monitoring of the Bank’s key risks and mitigations. 

 

The Operational Risk Management team provides operational risk related support and challenge to departments and leadership teams across the Bank, as well as supporting the Risk Committee in discharging its accountabilities. The Bank is strengthening the embedding of operational risk in the organisation, and the role holder is expected to actively support the Operational Risk team in these activities. 

 

Equity Risk Management (Equity Funds/Financial Institutions sub-team) provides review, risk assessment, monitoring and fair valuations of the Bank’s projects financing banks, micro-finance organisations and non-banking financial institutions (insurance, leasing, stock exchanges and structured products). The products include equity, hybrid, deeply subordinated debt, securitisation.

 

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

 

Operational Risk team rotation: The role holder will work under the supervision of a team member within Operational Risk, which will vary depending on experience and relevant task. Overall accountability will reside with an Associate Director in the team. The role holder will be expected to assist on activities assigned, with key responsibilities that will include:

 

  • Support the work of the Operational Risk team under the guidance of a team member, working with some business coverage areas.
  • Prepare reports & agenda for a weekly team meeting, assist with coordinating the meetings & activity follow up.
  • Help manage the network of Business Risk Champions; including changes, setup, changes to team structures, managing BRC communications and updates.
  • Assist with managing the operational risk system; new users, risk and control library reviews, RCSA maintenance, incident and issue mgmt controls, system changes.
  • Reporting and Risk Appetite; Assist in managing and developing reports to allow more streamlined analysis and provide dashboards to enhance monitoring of operational risks.

Equity Risk Management team rotation: During the internship, the intern is expected to develop the necessary skills for general risk identification, credit and structuring skills across different Financial Institutions/Equity Funds subsectors and projects. In addition to the opportunity of learning on the job with exposure to a variety of projects, risk managers and Banking teams, the intern is expected to participate in internal risk training alongside other bankers on rotation in ERM, as well as external risk courses (Damodaran valuation course, Rating presentations, etc.) as appropriate.

 

Specific tasks will include:

 

  • Provide analytical support and advise to Banking teams in credit review of new project proposals (Concept, Structure and Final Reviews).
  • Advice on valuation to Banking teams based on market benchmarks.
  • Learn to draft risk notes under the supervision of Risk Managers.
  • Attend meetings and discussions with bankers; participate in investment committee meetings (pre-Ops, Opscom and SBIC meetings).
  • Review and test financial projections, models assumptions, and sensitivities.
  • Review term sheets and legal documentation.
  • Become familiar with Operations Manual, Equity notes and Risk policy documents.
  • Become familiar with key sources for rating and pricing data to assist risk decisions. 
  • Become familiar with equity valuation methods

 

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualification 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree or relevant experience is an advantage but not a requirement. Ability to understand and analyse financial statements is an essential requirement.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and to deadlines and under time pressure.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills are critical, while strong technical skills more broadly are beneficial.
