Role Overview


The Associate Director, Senior Banker will work as part of the SME Corporate Portfolio Fast Reaction Unit and will act as a senior member of project teams, responsible for advising on complex and contentious projects in pre-distress situations, with the aim of finding restructuring solutions before the impairment becomes unavoidable. The type of projects may involve SME debt and/or quasi-equity investments across any of the corporate sectors in the EBRD’s countries of operation. The Associate Director, will support and deputise for the SME Portfolio Management, when required, in the overall management of portfolio functions in the SME F&D Group including ensuring high quality and consistency of processes, mechanisms and underlining monitoring of signed projects, ensuring that all risks and credit issues are understood, addressed and reported appropriately and tracking project implementation to ensure the efficient generation of operating assets.

The Associate Director, Senior Banker takes responsibility for effective leadership in project teams, guides junior banking staff, and provides adequate coaching and mentoring assistance, under the supervision of the SME F&D Associate Director, Portfolio Management. The Associate Director will work closely with country team bankers and Heads of Resident Offices to support them in corporate portfolio risk assessment including drafting internal memos.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities


  • Responsible for advising, developing, structuring  and implementing sustainable restructuring strategies and other measures necessary to maximise the returns to the Bank and to restore projects to acceptable risk ratings, or ensure a timely exit in co-operation with the relevant internal units, including Sector Teams, Risk Management, and OGC.
  • As a senior member of the project teams, manage the execution of approved restructuring structures, including credit and financial analysis; taking lead in negotiations with borrowers, third party/parallel and/or subordinated lenders, sponsors and other equity providers as required.
  • Supporting Regional Heads (RHs) and country team bankers/management by being responsible for the drafting of internal memos necessary to implement the restructuring solutions including preparing portfolio/NPL analysis.
  • Support and deputise, as required, for the Associate Director, SME Portfolio Management in leading the monthly SME corporate portfolio monitoring meetings, which focus on problem areas/projects. Provide for a conducive environment/forum in which different view-points can be debated with the aim of reaching consensus among internal stakeholders. Assist the SME Associate Director, Portfolio Management as required in achieving the portfolio management goals for the unit.
  • In close co-ordination with the SME Regional Heads and SME Associate Director, Portfolio Management participate actively in project assessments in order to identify the early warning signs of any possible distress within the corporate SME portfolio.
  • Connect with all relevant Departments and Resident Offices within the EBRD, to ensure support for the implementation of the strategy developed for each project.
  • Liaise with external counterparties such as: legal firms, accountants, consultants, other advisors and the relevant EBRD internal teams.
  • Responsible for sharing relevant knowledge and expertise with other departments in the Bank, including being responsible for drafting and structuring internal memos aimed at analysing current and historic issues in the SME portfolio
  • Actively involved in coaching of junior bankers assigned to work on SME corporate deals within the unit, and in HQ / Resident Offices in portfolio management and restructuring techniques.
  • Responsible for providing timely, accurate and comprehensive information on the status of the allocated projects to the SME Associate Director, Portfolio Management, SME Regional Heads and other relevant internal counterparties; liaise if needed with Risk Management. Actively participate in the monthly SME corporate portfolio monitoring meetings. 
  • When deemed necessary by the Director, Regional Network, collaborates and assists with work on new transactions which may not be in need of restructuring.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications



  • Extensive relevant banking experience in a major financial institution where the Associate Director, Senior Banker will have acquired strong credit, analytical, corporate banking and deal execution experience, in particular:
    • in transactin structuring, execution and project management
    • in restructuring / wrk-out situations and / or shareholder value creation in distressed equity
  • In-depth credit and financial analysis skills
  • Ability to analyse complex situations and make clear judgements
  • Excellent people’s skills and ability to interact with multiple internal and external stakeholders
