Purpose of Job
The English Editor (Band 4 - Analyst) is integral to the editorial output of the Editorial and Creative Unit, within the EBRD’s Communications Department. The successful candidate will assist editorial colleagues in the production of print and digital corporate titles, including editing and proofreading text, collating and responding to comments, checking printers’ proofs and preparing short descriptive summaries for use in external and internal corporate communications. They will be responsible for delivering products on time, within budget and to a brief.

 

Background
The Editorial and Creative Unit is responsible for the writing, editing, design and production of EBRD products (physical and digital). These products aim to inform stakeholders about the Bank, its mission and impact. The Unit also works on publications, internal and external communication campaigns, events, websites, stories and social media. In addition, the EBRD’s design function is responsible for managing, developing and protecting the Bank’s brand identity. 

The English Editor position is a full-time role focused on responding effectively to briefs from within and without the EBRD’s Communications Department. Working closely with the Associate Director, Editorial and Creative and the Principal (Editorial), the staff member will deliver a wide range of corporate and promotional products in a corporate communications environment. The role requires excellent copy editing and project management skills and is not a journalist or analyst position.

 

Facts / Scale

  • Reporting to the Associate Director, Editorial and Creative.
  • Assignment of day-to-day tasks and mentoring by Associate Director and Principal (Editorial), Editorial and Creative.
  • No direct people management responsibilities but committee decision-making experience.
  • Self-directed and managed tasks.
  • Liaison with colleagues in the Communications Department, other EBRD departments and external suppliers.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Assist editorial colleagues in the production of print corporate titles, including editing text, collating and responding to comments, checking printers’ proofs and preparing short descriptive summaries.
  • Assist editorial colleagues in the production of digital publications, for example, by proofing, testing and troubleshooting online versions.
  • Prepare detailed production schedules for EBRD publications.
  • Copy-edit and proofread promotional products such as press releases, brochures, presentations, posters, invitations and banners.
  • Copy-edit and proofread content for online and print campaigns, for internal and external audiences, as required. 
  • Help edit and proofread content produced for the website and newsletter of the EBRD Alumni Association. 
  • Help maintain and update the publication sections of ebrd.com, in consultation with colleagues responsible for online communications.
  • Help maintain and monitor the project management database, Trello. 
  • Monitor the publications email inbox and help respond to requests and queries.
  • Run reports and statistical analyses for digital publications, particularly corporate reports. 
  • Undertake any other editorial duties, as required. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • University degree (or equivalent) a minimum. A degree in English or a qualification in  communications, publishing or creative writing would be an asset. 
  • Minimum of three years editing in-house, agency or freelance.
  • Solid editorial portfolio, in various media.
  • Experience in corporate communications would be an asset.
  • Interest in international development. 
  • Willingness to work in a multicultural environment. 
  • Fluent English, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Excellent copy-editing
  • Ability to carry out structural editing if required.
  • Editorial experience in preparing publications, materials and products for the digital and/or print environment.
  • Proven organisational skills in a demanding environment. Event and database management skills would be additional assets.
  • Knowledge of the digital publishing environment, as well as social media promotion.
  • Strong team player but with the ability to work on own initiative with limited supervision and instructions.
  • Ability to focus on different workstreams in parallel, while prioritising and working to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues in the Communications Department and other teams, as well as external contributors, and to work effectively within a multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. Ability to learn quickly how to use other software tools that are needed to exercise the functions of the job.
