Role overview

The Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Finance & Development (SME F&D) Group provides a set of tools to support growth and development of SMEs across 30 countries of operations. These include loans and investments through financial institutions and risk-sharing facilities as well as direct finance to small businesses, business advice and work with policy-makers. The vast majority of these projects are funded by donors, including the European Union and around 20 different governments and institutions. 

The Analyst is responsible for supporting market development, communications and visibility activities about the work of the EBRD’s SME F&D Group and about donors that support them, with a focus on Kazakhstan. The Analyst is also a key liaison with EBRD Communications Department, local banking teams, EBRD consultants, media stakeholders, as well as communications counterparties in donor organisations, with regards to visibility and seizing opportunities to raise awareness of the role of donors in the Bank’s SME programmes.  

The Analyst will be raising awareness of the impact the donor funding is making on people’s lives and businesses with target audiences in beneficiary and donor countries. The Analyst selects, produces and promotes relevant stories through a wide-range of communications products, including editorial and multimedia content to a range of audiences, managing relationships with key communications stakeholders in addition to supporting awareness-raising and visibility activities. The Analyst thereby contributes to promoting the pipeline of SME F&D projects and furthering the dissemination and demonstration effect of SME activities across EBRD regions.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Proactively design, implement and evaluate market development, including awareness raising, and visibilities activities, acting as the focal point for coordinating these activities.
  • Collaborate with the Principal Manager, Communications to develop and implement communications plans for the projects or programmes, ensuring the positive impact and results of the EBRD and donor activities is emphasised and that those visibility activities are in line with EBRD communications policies and donor priorities and requirements.
  • Develop and manage relationships with media, including preparing press releases, press kits, supporting press events.
  • Identify, research and write copy for case studies of successful projects and initiatives to disseminate best practices and amplify the demonstration effect of SME F&D activities in Kazakhstan; these would include multimedia products.
  • Propose and implement social media campaigns to promote donor-funded SME programmes.
  • Contribute to effective internal communications efforts, within the SME F&D Group and across the Bank.
  • Prepare newsletters, donor updates and other information materials as necessary for external distribution to stakeholders and partners so they are informed about SME F&D activities.
  • Monitor and report on online media for coverage of the programme and key issues relating to the SMEs and the consultancy sector in Kazakhstan.
  • Ensure up-to-date information on the SME F&D website pages and social media platforms and regularly supply content for centrally managed communications activities.
  • Ensure marketing, communications and visibility of SME activities in Kazakhstan are aligned with EBRD’s broader marketing, communications and visibility efforts in the same country.
  • Contribute to the development of internal and donor reports to inform donors on the progress of activities and utilisation of funding.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Marketing, Communications, Journalism, other related field etc.) and/or equivalent communications/digital marketing experience.
  • Relevant academic and professional experience, preferably from a professional news, digital communications, public relations or marketing field.
  • Strong event management and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of producing high-end editorial and multimedia content (including, photography and videos) and online marketing campaigns.
  • Knowledge of donor funded work, donor organisations and national stakeholders such as regional development agencies, chambers of commerce & industry and other SME support organisations desirable.
  • Knowledge of local business environment and consultancy market.
  • Reporting on communications outreach. Strong writing skills; experience in writing impactful content for the public and donors, and of altering tone for audience and platform (web, social media, publications).
  • Effective communication, presentation and collaboration skills and ability to manage relations with press, clients, consultants, donors and stakeholders as well as the ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats, to the right audience at the right time.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, understanding of enterprise financials desirable.
  • Fluency in English and Russian, both written and verbal. Knowledge of Kazakh is desirable.
  • Computer literate: excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel and Power Point; knowledge of design programmes such as Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro) an advantage.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the EBRD mandate, passionate about private sector development.
  • Effective, persuasive and diplomatic communication skills. Ability to work in multi-cultural environment.
  • Multi-tasking, self-initiative, creativity.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel
