Purpose of Job

 

The Principal, IT Lead Architect is accountable for the definition and promotion of all aspects of the Enterprise Reference Architecture and Architecture Practice that support IT for the Bank. These architectures provide strategic guidance to all technology initiatives. The Principal, IT Lead Architect is further accountable for defining the overall architecture and design of IT solutions, and matrix-managing a team of technical and functional specialists in the elaboration of solutions within the defined architecture.

 

The role interacts with primarily with all IT teams, but also engages with many of the business functions across the Bank. 

 

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

 

  • Accountable for specific aspects of Architecture Practice, to bring consistency and efficiency to the way architecture is executed.
  • Shapes the technology content of the annual Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), defining the direction and solutions for £nnm of business and IT-led demand
  • Works with the business to proactively identify and maintain the Enterprise Reference Architecture (ERA), to ensure systems are fit for purpose and meet evolving business requirements. Communicate strategies and roadmaps showing how the ERA will be realised in an effective incremental fashion.
  • Define and maintain the structure and processes for the Architectural Knowledge Base, to enable a consistent and efficient approach to the retention and re-use of architectural knowledge assets.
  • Explain and promote the ERA within and beyond IT to develop effective sponsorship of strategic architectural priorities and approaches.
  • Assists the Associate Director, to define the strategic direction of the function in order to drive forward change and to best support the Bank’s mission and strategic objectives
  • Advises Project Steering Committees and ensures senior stakeholders and sponsors are kept up to date
  • Champion and role model the Bank’s Behavioural Competencies and Corporate Behaviours, ensuring adherence within the team(s) so that the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct are exhibited at all times.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to projects from an early stage, ensuring they follow an optimal direction from the outset
  • Ensure that solutions are technically sound and will function as expected in production. Any operational risks or considerations of the technology solution should be understood and agreed before implementation
  • Ensure that solutions are an appropriate balance between short-term delivery needs and medium-term strategic aspirations. All deviations from agreed roadmaps should be explicit and agreed through appropriate governance
  • Help develop and run an effective process governing technology strategy and project solutions
  • Guide and mentor the Architects within the team to promote their skills and their knowledge of the Bank’s IT landscape and strategies.
  • Research trends in architectural approaches and technologies to provide high quality advice to management on opportunities and architectural implications of new initiatives.
  • Deputises for the Associate Director, as required to ensure the smooth running of the team.

 

 

Education and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. Masters preferred or equivalent experience in the area of expertise

Qualification in Enterprise or Solution Architecture.

 

Knowledge and Experience

  • Extensive experience in solution architecture across a range of platforms and business domains
  • Wide-ranging experience of IT projects throughout the implementation lifecycle
  • Experience in integration techniques and technologies
  • Ability to develop deep business knowledge and offer advice that spans IT and business domains.
  • Extensive knowledge of a wide range of contemporary IT platforms, techniques and methodologies
  • Experience drafting and presenting policy and strategy papers to senior stakeholders
  • Experience of working in a mid-sized corporate environment, successfully aligning solutions appropriately with wider roadmaps, architecture and other initiatives
  • Experience as a collaborative leader
  • Demonstrable evidence of facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency.
  • Evidence of building a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and problem solving.
  • Track record of successfully leading technical and non-technical team in complex and demanding delivery environments

 

Specific accountabilities and responsibilities for this assignment are:

 

  • Define and have accountability for the overall architectural strategy and roadmaps of IT solutions within the capability, taking into account business aspiration, overall technology strategy and technical constraints
  • Provide key input to the capabilities roadmap of initiatives, in order to realise the ERA in an effective, incremental fashion
  • Be a key contributor to the business cases helping to outline the solutions and associated costs

 

  • Specific knowledge and experience that are strongly desired for this assignment are:
  • Demonstrable experience in developing ERP strategy and developing the associated roadmaps, and taking them through the formal governance
  • Demonstrable experience shaping business cases for large projects (£5m+)
  • Awareness of the various technologies in the treasury, risk and finance domain (e.g. SAP, Summit) and the ability to work across both familiar and unfamiliar technologies to provide big picture advice and direction
  • Good business / functional knowledge of one or more areas within treasury, risk or finance
  • Experience working in the Financial Services sector
