The Principal, Green Innovation will be the dedicated lead for the delivery of the Green Innovation Programme (GIP), liaising closely with colleagues based in London, Brussels and in the relevant EBRD Regional Offices. The Principal, Green Innovation will help the EBRD maximise the impact of the GIP by coordinating outreach efforts; developing further the pipeline of companies to consider supporting; using their own technical and business knowledge, and that of others in the Bank, to identify or investigate green innovation options with clients; and facilitating strong and enduring links between companies, academia and other research institutions from the relevant member states with relevant innovation and low carbon business networks.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities


  • Take over the management of the GIP and the liaison with companies already being supported.
  • In coordination with GECA colleagues, analyse relevant market sectors in the relevant member states to identify potential areas for innovation.
  • In partnership with GECA and sector and resident office teams, identify companies to potentially collaborate with and lead marketing efforts.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of companies’ innovation plans, including by identifying, procuring and managing external consultants following the Bank’s procurement processes.
  • Working with colleagues from the banking and legal teams to enter into support agreements with companies.
  • Analyse, monitor, assess completeness and impact, and report on the relevant donor programme, including financial reports, and inform donors on progress and impact. This task will be undertaken in coordination with, and with the support of, the Bank’s Donor Co-Financing (DCF) department.
  • Analyse current and upcoming EU legislation relating to innovation in climate and environmental topics and keep team members appraised of new developments.
  • Identify relevant public and private stakeholders in Brussels and in relevant EU member states, and build and facilitate relationships as appropriate including with innovation networks.
  • Analyse and brief team members on complementarity with other innovation facilities run by the EC (such as the small scale project facility of the Innovation Fund) and by other multilateral development banks and other financial institutions.
  • Attend meetings and build relationships with key EU institutions, especially DG RTD, DG ENER, DG GROW, DG Environment and DG CLIMA.
  • Participate in project pipeline development efforts with business investment platform managers under initiatives such as the European Battery Alliance, EU Hydrogen Alliance, EU Raw Materials Alliance, the Circular Bio-based Europe JU etc. Analyse all project opportunities forthcoming from these sources in Romania, Bulgaria and Latvia.
  • Develop deep working links with the ‘ecosystem’ of innovation and low carbon solution networks and research organisations based in and around the EU. Identify key partners/organisations/networks within and outside the realm of the European Commission that can support/enhance the implementation of the programme. Connect with networks/ groups in all relevant sectors, for example with the EIT KICs focused on Climate, Digital, Food, Manufacturing, Energy, Urban Mobility and Raw Materials.
  • Facilitate exposure of companies, business associations, academia and other research organisations based in the three relevant member states to these networks.
  • Participate in relevant events related to research and innovation in the climate and environment fields, and connect stakeholders within the three member states. Where necessary, organise such events on behalf of the EBRD e.g. during the European Research and Innovation Days, EU Green Week or EU Sustainable Energy Week.
  • In coordination with GECA management, participate in EU technical working groups related to GIP in order to ensure deeper collaboration between EBRD and the EU on technical aspects related to CTIP.
  • Help develop communication and visibility material to promote relevant GIP activities and case studies to stakeholders.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications


  • Strong academic background with relevant Master’s degree, such as in Engineering or the Sciences, from a university in the country of education. Finance backgrounds also beneficial provided accompanied by strong understanding of climate technologies and measures.
  • Relevant professional experience and expertise in climate change and environmental issues, preferably gained from a technical/ scientific organisation. Experience in manufacturing, energy, IT, construction and/ or agriculture sectors highly desirable. Experience in commercial research and development and deployment of innovative technologies or business practices would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of industry in Romania, Bulgaria and/or Latvia would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of EU climate and green policies desirable.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills and ability to draw insightful conclusions.
  • Strong writing skills; experience in writing reports desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to interface with multi-country teams.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal; knowledge of Romanian or Bulgarian is an advantage.
  • Computer literate: excellent knowledge of Excel and Power Point.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the EBRD mandate, passionate about private sector development and innovation.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment.
